Episode 5 - Tomi, Zoe. Cleopatra           March 2006

The new ART617 “Tomi, Zoe, and Cleopatra” episode 5, "uncommon television"features the recent Tomi Ungerer exhibit at the Copley Square Boston Public Library where we’re joined by Stephanie Molinard of the Rose Art Museum who curated this rare and exclusive retrospective of his career.

The exhibit, organized and sponsored in part by the Boston/Strasbourg Sister Cities Program, begins with his arrival in New York City in 1956 from his hometown of Strasbourg, France and includes his political and social commentary in posters, drawings and books, all with the stinging Ungerer wit.

The exquisite new music of Boston composer Ahmed al-Gendy buoys the Ungerer segment with arrangements written exclusively for ART617.

Next we visit the Dance Complex in Cambridge for the dress rehearsal of “Piel contra piel” or “Skin on Skin,” a passionate night of contemporary dance with  Zoe Dance Company and choreographers Callie Chapman Korn, Ivan Korn and Emily Beattie.

Finally, Ryan Landry and the Gold Dust Orphans work out the kinks in “Cleopatra: The Musical” before opening night at Machine. It’s an inside look at the production and how even the end of show cast bows to the audience are rehearsed. Landry talks with us about what it takes to produce theater in Boston, as only Ryan can.

The fine arts, music, dance, film, and performance are all to be found on ART617.
